Our Locals
Every city has its institutions: the places you recommend without hesitation. The neighbourhood spots you return to time and again, where the food is only part of the appeal, and the people behind them are just as much a part of the experience.
This new journal series is about the local places we love to visit. Eateries, pubs and shops that have become part of the fabric of their neighbourhood, each with their own history, traditions, and loyal community.
We'll spend time with the proprietors, hear the stories behind the business, and capture the atmosphere that makes each place feel unique. It's less about where to eat or visit, and more about the people and places that give the city its character.
We met Simone and Giovanni, the proprietors of H.T. Harris Delicatessen, a (not so) hidden gem tucked away on Great Titchfield Street, for a sandwich and a coffee. Those who have attended our store parties will be well-acquainted with their sandwiches.
H.T. Harris is a local deli that's been serving the neighbourhood for generations. It's the kind of place where familiar faces are always walking through the door and conversations carry on across the counter and often past closing time.
H.T. Harris has occupied the same corner for more than six decades. "My grandparents opened the place over 60 years ago," Simone tells me. "We've been here ever since, and it's always been H.T. Harris."
People return here week after week, whether they are stopping in for lunch, picking up a few Italian ingredients for dinner, or simply catching up over an espresso. More often than not, you'll find father and son behind the counter, greeting regulars by name and quietly carrying on a family tradition that has endured for more than sixty years.
Italian heritage runs through everything they do. "We come originally from the south of Italy. I was born in London just around the corner from here, but my family comes from a small town near Termoli," Simone says.
That connection to home shapes everything on the shelves and behind the deli counter. "The food is close to home, simple stuff, all products from Italy, from farms and producers straight to the table."
After all this time in the neighbourhood, the sense of community is just as important as the food. "This neighbourhood is lovely. We have seen it change during the years, but we still know all the locals that have been coming here for years. It feels very homely to us."
It is that combination of tradition, quality and familiarity that has quietly made H.T. Harris part of the neighbourhood's daily life, reminding you that the best food is often about the people behind it as much as what ends up on the plate.
